Burial at Menorah Cemetery, Clifton, NJ

Norman Aaron Walensky, PhD, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and professor, passed away peacefully in the home he cherished on May 8, 2026, at the age of 90. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on June 10, 1935, to Sally and Philip Walensky, Norman lived a life defined by education, devotion to family, and a calm, kind, and generous spirit. A founding faculty member of Rutgers Medical School, he dedicated his professional life to teaching and mentoring generations of undergraduates, medical students, and physician assistants as a Professor of Anatomy at Rutgers University in New Brunswick and Piscataway, New Jersey. A gifted and legendary educator, Norman was known for bringing human anatomy, embryology, and neuroanatomy vividly to life, filling blackboards with intricate multicolored chalk drawings of the human body that were unforgettable to his students and colleagues alike. Former students frequently recalled him as one of the most inspiring teachers of their lives, with many going on to careers in anatomy and medicine because of his influence. After graduating from Muhlenberg College and earning his M.S. and Ph.D. at George Washington University School of Medicine, Norman began his academic career at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he conducted research on archival skeletal specimens at the Smithsonian Institution, experiences that helped shape the distinguished teaching career that followed. His scholarly work explored human skeletal variation and physical anthropology and is referenced in Gray’s Anatomy. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Norman found joy in the simple and meaningful pleasures of life. He loved plants and especially cactuses, antiquing and collecting memorabilia, travel by land and sea, and above all, the quiet comforts of home and family. He was a careful listener, a provider of thoughtful advice to all who sought his counsel, and happiest sharing stories, knowledge, and time with those he loved. Norman was the cherished husband of Susan for nearly 65 years, loving father of Robyn and Loren, adored grandfather of Seth, Matthew, and Joshua, and dear father-in-law, uncle, cousin, mentor, and friend to many. His warmth, wisdom, humor, and steady presence touched countless lives and will be profoundly missed. Funeral services will be held on May 11 at Jewish Memorial Chapel in Clifton, New Jersey at 1PM. Shiva will be observed at the family home on May 11 after the funeral until 7 PM and on May 12 from 12–3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the college Norman adored at https://give.muhlenberg.edu/campaigns/53103/donations/new May his memory be a blessing.

Hipschman was born March 15, 1930, in Havana, Cuba where her parents, Nicolas Weiss and Mariska Tackacz, met after emigrating from Hungary. It is with great sadness that I share the sudden and unimaginable passing of my brother Amir Bakal at his home in Miami Florida on February 26, 2026. Amir was a kind and gentle soul, a passionate artist, musician, dreamer, dog dad, lover, empath, Thunderstorm and Balagan. He was born on August 10th, 1971, in Livingston NJ. He graduated from the Harvey School in Katonah, NY and Bennington College in Vermont as a fine art major. He was a passionate and prolific artist, creating hundreds of pieces over his lifetime. He painted in textures and colors with a vibrancy and energy that reflected the inner chaos of his thinking, and the many influences of his life. He had apprenticed and interned under several notable artists. He learned woodworking and carving with James Surls in Splendora, Texas; He worked at Pinchas Eschet’s design and fabrication studio in Tel Aviv; with Ephrahim Asofe learning how to draw to scale and design and build metal and wood; and Greg Wyatt in NY where he learned to work in clay and bronze. Amir was a gentle soul. He cared for his family, his nephews, his parents, his friends and any stranger that crossed his path. He adopted animals throughout his life. He was very generous with his time and was the first to offer help under any circumstance. He is survived by his parents, Abraham and Frida Bakal, his brother and sister in-law Gil Bakal & Kerry Kinney, and his nephews Fisher and Miles Bakal. “Painting is much like a novel, it’s goal is to take you away to the world created by the artist. My goal is to transport you and allow you to feel through color and texture. I am an abstract expressionist! I create spaces and environments reflecting my feelings at a given moment through my dialogue with the paint and canvas. Color evokes feelings”
